Rural Craft Award

Thatch The Melplash Agricultural Society is launching a new competition for Rural Crafts. The competition will be open to craftsmen and women living within a twelve mile radius of Melplash Church and who derive their livelihood or a greater part of it from their craft. Entrants will be judged in the summer months working on site or in the workshop. Pictured is Guy Gale thatching the ridge of Rose Cottage, Netherbury with Ian Hobday his assistant.

Young Farmers Stock Judging

This year our annual Stock Judging competition will be held on Tuesday 9th July 2013 at Wooth Farm, near Bridport (DT6 5LE) by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Frank Greenway.

There are 3 classes for Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors. This year our judge is Mrs Jane Targett of Castle Cary, Somerset. The evening starts at 7.30pm and spectators are welcome.

Best Bridport Banger Competition

Banger_illustration_2013 Our new competition for 2013 is the Best Bridport Banger which will be judged by Richard Balson of RJ Balson & Son Butchers in Bridport, Britain's oldest family butcher. Whether sausage making is your hobby or part of your business this is a fantastic opportunity to gain recognition for your product. Open to anyone who makes their own pork sausages. Closing date for entries is Friday 16th August 2013 - 5pm.

2013 GARDEN & ALLOTMENT COMPETITION

If the longer days and brighter weather (when not raining!) is inspiring you to get out into the garden, why not get your hard work rewarded and enter the 2013 Melplash Agricultural Society Garden Competition. There is a category to suit everyone including, after a successful pilot last year, an allotment competition.

There are three garden categories and this year we are adding a new category just for allotments. Judging for the competition will be Tuesday 18th & Wednesday 19th June 2013. The competition is free to enter and open to everyone who lives within 12 miles radius of Melplash Village Church. There are prizes for best small, medium and large gardens and best allotment.

Seafood Chowder Competition

Seafood_Chowder_illustration The Riverside Restaurant in West Bay is offering prizes for the best Seafood Chowder. Open to amateur cooks of all ages, male or female. All entries and the winning seafood chowder will be on display in the ‘By the Sea Marquee’. Prize giving will take place on show day at 12 noon on Thursday 22nd August 2013.

2012 Flock Competition Results

Mr_and_Mrs_Studley The Melplash Agricultural Society Flocks competitions reward local farmers for their shepherding skills and flock management. There are three awards given:

The Melplash Agricultural Society Perpetual Plaque for the best flock of 15 -50 Ewes

The JRB Bowditch Perpetual Cup for the best flock of 51-300 Ewes

The Newall Perpetual Cup for the best flock of 301 and over

The Judges this year were Mr M Flatt, Crewkerne & Mr John Hoskin, Dorchester. Overall, they look for good sheep husbandry and flock profitability. They assess, among other things, the management and handling of the flock, flock conformation, the quality and condition of the sheep, how they are performing and the number of lambs produced per head.

Results of 2012 Farm Competition

Mobile_Pictures_157 The Melplash Agricultural Society’s aim is to support and promote local farming and the annual Farms competitions is in place to give local farmers a chance to gain recognition for their good husbandry and dedication. There are 3 categories: small (up to 300 acres), Mixed Large and Large Dairy.

Curry Competition

curry_comp The Taj Mahal in Bridport and Sea Spring Seeds in West Bexington are kindly offering prizes for the best curry. The winners will be the cooks recognised by the judges for producing the best curry. Judging will take place at the Taj Mahal on Wednesday 21st August and the winning curry dishes will be displayed at the show.
